You guys are literally risking your lives for the safety of your neighbors, an incredible example of community in these fractured and terrifying times. Because of the example of people like Alex Pretti, I am working to make a difference in my community, to make my care for my neighbors known. The on-the-ground efforts make me proud to be American, a strange feeling when the “official” representatives of the country want to murder people in the streets. One of my favorite poems is Langston Hughes’ “Let America Be America Again” in which he shows how the US has never been what it proclaims to be. But I believe that it can be, if we dedicate ourselves to freedom and justice that are professed as American ideals. As Langston Hughes says, “O, let America be America again— / The land that never has been yet— / And yet must be—the land where every man is free.” God bless you all for your efforts in maintaining freedom for the people of the US.
